SUSTAINABILITY
SEE Centennial is shaping the path for a sustainable future.
We are committed to providing customers, business owners and employees with an exceptional experience, while incorporating environmentally sustainable operating practices and energy-efficiency measures at our property.
SEE Centennial is built on three cornerstones of Sustainability, Efficiency, and the Environment. At Green Tree Mall, we recognize our role in environmental stewardship, both as a property manager and a vibrant member of the communities we serve.
How are we doing so far? In 2020, our efforts added up:
Returning 109 tons of organic food waste back to the earth in the form of fertilizer, while 175 tons of cardboard, paper, plastic film and hangers were collected and recycled.Reprocessing and reusing 72 tons of single stream waste (wood pallets, cooking oil, metal, landscape clippings, and roof gravel) in various ways.Recycling 34% of all trash generated at Green Tree Mall in 2020.Using eight Volta charging stations to power cars with 261,283 miles of clean driving. Our management team is continually evolving our internal sustainability roadmap, which is a guide for how we approach new projects and manage the property day to day. Some recent examples include:
Phase 2 of an ongoing HVAC replacement project involving packaged units was completed in October, impacting the last two months of 2019 use. In this project, (3) 30-year-old 40-ton capacity rooftop package units were replaced with new energy efficient package units. The goal was to replace Direct Drive Units with VFDs to drive improved energy efficiency. The HVAC Cool 2 Save project completed in 2020 is expected to bring savings of 778,000 kWh per year. This project installed pre-cooling equipment which will reduce energy required to cool the air.An energy-efficient reroof was completed in May which installed three new layers of insulation to the roof, reducing heat gain to the building.Green Tree Mall requires cleaning products used in the mall are Green Clean certified products.Green Tree Mall upgraded the Energy Management System to use smart controllers to optimize operations and thus use fewer raw materials that would have been needed to replace prematurely failing equipment, while also ensuring the most efficient energy use has resulted in a 10% total electrical consumption reduction annually. In addition to the operational improvements, we also engage the community with environmentally responsible events and initiatives that enhance the customer experience, including:
Installation of a Live Green Wall along the escalator in the Dining Court. On April 20, 2019, Green Tree Mall hosted an Earth Day Event, partnering with seven different organizations to promote recycling efforts - from crayons to tech waste, from used clothing to eyeglasses. Children and their families enjoyed Earth Day crafts & activities. During the event, a series of 4ft tall wire-framed letters that spelled the word E-A-R-T-H were on display to create an interactive exhibit. Each letter was filled with materials like newspapers, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bags, and cardboard to drive home the importance of recycling and re-using as well as the types of materials that can be recycled. While we are proud of what we have accomplished so far, we are always working to institute new programs designed to decrease our carbon footprint, reduce waste, conserve natural resources, reduce our energy use, and save money.
